This is a special issue being brought out on the 117th birth anniversary of D.D.Kosambi, and dedicated to him, from whom we draw inspiration to carry forward his ideals . As Jatin Naik from Goa says “Prof Kosambi deserves to be remembered as one of the highly gifted and versatile scientific workers and indefatigable scholar of modern India for whom a relentless search for the highest human values was the only natural way of life. He was a polymath and was also a polyglot and had the ability to speak several languages with a high degree of proficiency including Sanskrit, Pali, Latin German, French, Italian, Spanish.” . He was a mathematician, statistician, Marxist historian, and polymath who contributed to genetics by introducing Kosambi’s map function. He is well known for his work in numismatics and for compiling critical editions of ancient Sanskrit texts. He was very active in the peace movement along with Sir Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell in opposing nuclear weapons. He vigorously supported research and use of solar energy in the 50’s. Thus he played an important role in offering an alternative approach to the established model of development in the field of science and technology in India.
